Senate passes bill targeting safe disposal of controlled substances

The Senate this week passed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, a bill that relaxes certain rules regarding the disposal of controlled substances in long-term care facilities.
The bill, S. 3397, which now goes to the House for approval, amends portions of the Controlled Substances Act. The Drug Enforcement Agency heavily regulates the disposal of prescription medications. Restrictions surrounding controlled substances lead to delays in filling necessary prescriptions for nursing home residents.
“Our bill enacts sensible reforms endorsed by the DEA and state attorneys general that will enable individuals and long-term care facilities to safely dispose of controlled substances,” Sen. Bob Corker (D-TN), a co-sponsor of the bill.
