Recognition of the potential safety gains has led to increased adoption of central pharmacy automation over the past decade, with at least one source reporting current usage at 10.2% of hospitals surveyed. GOVERNMENT TECHNOLOGY – Corrections departments are responsible for so many burdensome tasks that many of their everyday functions, like administering prescription drugs to inmates, are afterthoughts for the public. However, dispensing medication was so laborious and wasteful for the San Bernardino County (Calif.) Sheriff-Coroner Department that officials sought a way to streamline the process. THE SEATTLE TIMES – In the Talyst system, medications are restocked daily with those used in a particular location. Specifications are fed into a computer, creating customized, labeled packets for each patient. At long-term and prison facilities, the system uses a vending-machine model, which is stocked daily. The machines are designed to decrease waste and free the nursing staff from having to count pills. Read More
